Baxter is one of the leading suppliers of biopharmaceuticals for the prevention and treatment of many life-threatening conditions. These life-saving products treat or protect against many conditions such as hemophilia, immune deficiency disorders, Rhesus factor complications in pregnancy, infectious disease and tissue sealing for surgical patients. One key factor in all that we do is safety. Patients must be confident that the medicines they take for their condition will not transmit known viral diseases such as HIV or hepatitis. To ensure that this is the case Baxter has pioneered some of the laboratory tests and manufacturing processes necessary to maintain the highest levels of assurance.

In addition, Baxter is among the leading suppliers of recombinant products (i.e. human proteins made by genetic engineering) for therapeutic use and vaccination. There has been no documented evidence of any virus transmission of hepatitis or HIV through a recombinant product. We work closely with doctors and nurses to serve and support them and to become their genuine partner in providing the best possible patient care.

For patients who require vaccination against infectious diseases, Baxter produces vaccines to protect against Group C Meningitis and Tick-Borne Encephalitis. Our product development is focusing on anti-bacterial and anti-viral vaccines that have the potential to prevent and protect against meningococcal infections, influenza, yellow fever and Lyme disease. Baxter also produces therapeutic proteins to provide immuno-deficient patients with their missing immunoglobulins. For critically injured patients Baxter manufactures albumin from human plasma, which is used to replace lost fluid and maintain adequate blood volume and pressure.

For patients with bleeding disorders like hemophilia who lack the ability to clot blood normally, Baxter produces therapeutic proteins that prevent and treat bleeding episodes. We are currently working on the next generation of recombinant clotting factors for treatment of hemophilia. These will be produced without the addition of materials of human or animal origin at any stage of the manufacturing process or in the finished product. Baxter provides the first specific therapy for severe congenital protein C deficiency for patients with clotting disorders.

Surgeons often encounter situations where standard techniques such as suture and cautery alone are insufficient to obtain sustainable control of patient bleeding episodes or the sealing of tissues effectively for fluid or air leaks. Baxter produces and distributes an expanding range of products that are an adjunct to traditional methods and aid the surgeon in a variety of ways - preventing surgical adhesions, attaining hemostasis and the sealing of tissues quickly and effectively. These products are biocompatible and are completely reabsorbed by the body as part of the normal physiological wound healing process.
