Peritoneal Dialysis involves introducing dialysis fluid into the patient’s peritoneal cavity, using the peritoneum lining as a natural filter to clean your blood. The peritoneum is a thin membrane, which is located inside the abdomen. During PD, waste products in your blood and excess water are eliminated through diffusion and osmosis.
There are 2 types of home-based dialysis available – Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) and Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD).
In APD, dialysis is performed using a machine known as the HOMECHOICE that works through the night, while you are asleep. It is designed to work smartly, optimize the exchanges, and make the therapy more efficient. This is great for patients as they can continue with their normal daily routine and undertake dialysis while they sleep at night, in the comfort of their home.
CAPD is done manually, with 4 exchanges being performed daily at an interval of 4 to 6 hours, 7 days a week.
